UniSuper has opened up access to family and former members with the launch of Personal Accounts.

It came after strong demand from members to allow a broader range of relatives, not just spouses, the option to join the fund.

Personal Accounts is an accumulation style superannuation product that offers an online application process along with investment options and access to the super fund’s advice team.

It is open to members’ spouses and children, as well as immediate and extended family members including in-laws, cousins, grandparents and other family connections living in Australia.

Members would have access to the same 16 investment options as the Accumulation 1 product, including the balanced option, which delivered a 10.85 per cent return per annum for the five years to 31 October, and the three sustainability/environmental investment options.

UniSuper chief executive, Kevin O’Sullivan said: “We’ve listened to our members and are proud to offer our dedicated services more broadly to their families, knowing connections with the higher education and research sector run deep”.

The fund said it had received 500 online applications thus far since the launch.

Existing members under Spouse Accounts would see minimal change beside the new name, UniSuper said.
