The head of the banking and financial services group at Macquarie Bank, Peter Maher, was elected chairman of the Financial Services Council (FSC) at its annual general meeting.

Maher's election came as David Deverall retired as chairman after three years in the role.

The chief executive officer of Colonial First State, Brian Bissaker, was re-elected as deputy chairman, while AllianceBernstein's Australia and New Zealand chief, Michael Bargholz, replaced Maher as the other deputy chairman.

Maher said he would work with the council to “ensure the reforms deliver the best outcomes for consumers, without unnecessary regulation”.

Directors Harry Stout from ING Australia and Peter Promnitz from Mercer resigned from the board at the annual general meeting.

Geoff Summerhayes from Suncorp Life, and Equity Trustees’ Robin Burns have been appointed to fill the vacancies.

Other board members include Pauline Blight-Johnston, Brad Cooper, Greg Cooper, David Deverall, Warren Lee, Craig Meller, Steve Tucker, Ian Ward-Ambler and Maria Wilton.
