Paul Keating, Graham Morgan and Steven van Eyk have been named as some of the most influential people in financial services according to their industry peers.

The three were named along with a number of others in the inaugural Money Management Most Influential People lists which sought to find those people who have placed their stamp on the financial services industry today.

Keeping company with Keating, Morgan and van Eyk were well known figures Ken Breakspear, Lynn Ralph and John Godfrey as well as those receiving less public profile such as Barry Lambert, Bill Webster and Kerr Neilsen.

The names are part of two lists of 10 and highlight those people who have either had a long term influence or were involved in key events which changed the path of the industry as well as those dominating the financial services scene today.

As such this meant the list includes important figures such as Morgan, who was instrumental in the formation of the first master trusts and Keating who put in place the superannuation guarantee, as well as Peter Scott, who recently steered MLC as it joined with the National Australia Group.

The lists are based on the polling of a wide spectrum of members of the financial services industry, including those involved with financial planning, funds management, distribution, industry associations, research house and industry consultants and commentators.

They were asked to name those they considered to have, or currently hold influence, in the areas listed above. From this, nearly 100 names were returned and ranked statistically and a short list was formed as the basis for a round-table discussion.

At the round-table discussion Money Management invited eight well-known industry figures to debate and create the two lists as they appear in this edition. The panel consisted of Rob Coombe (BT Funds Management), Rob Keavney (ISG), Steve Tucker (MLC), Steven van Eyk (van Eyk Research), Krystyna Weston (Assirt) Tom Collins (The Tom Collins Consultancy), Brett Crowley (Perpetual) and Anton Tagliaferro (Investors Mutual).

In the event that members of the panel were also considered for inclusion on one of the lists, Money Management requested they not be present by stepping out of the room during the discussion.
