The Federal Government needs to clarify where it stands on the tax summit it promised during the last election, according to shadow assistant treasurer Senator Mathias Cormann.

Claiming the Federal Treasurer Wayne Swan appeared to have little appetite for the tax summit, Cormann said it was incumbent on the Government to clarify its position.

“In her effort to get the support of key independents for a minority Labor Government, the Prime Minister was quick to promise them a tax summit by 30 June 2011. Four months later we still have no date, no venue and no terms of reference,” he said.

Cormann said that as part of its commitment to the tax summit the Government had undertaken to convene experts on taxation to discuss the recommendations of the Henry Tax Review, but so far no one had been invited to participate.

He said the Federal Opposition believed Australia needed a fair dinkum Tax Summit focused on lower, fairer and simpler taxes.

“There is no indication that the Gillard Government has any intention to deliver genuine long-term tax reform, and we are keen to work with the independents to hold the Government to account on this,” Cormann said.
