One of the men behind the development of AMP's financial planning model, Steve Helmich, has been appointed as the chairman of Affinia.

TAL chief executive, Brett Clark, said Helmich would play a key role in driving Affinia through an ambitious growth phase over the next three years.

"We are very excited that Steve will chair the Affinia Board," Clark said.

"Steve has had an outstanding career in financial services and financial advice in particular. Steve will provide invaluable direction for Affinia, supporting our growth objectives and ensuring it operates efficiently and effectively, particularly during this transition period for the industry.

"We are committed to advisers and the important role high quality financial advice has in the community. Steve's stewardship will ensure excellent leadership to the Affinia Board.

"It is crucial that our board has strong governance structures in place and I am confident Steve will provide unique expertise and insight for our Affinia business to help drive our growth ambition. I am absolutely delighted he has accepted the role of chair."

When Helmich's departure from AMP was announced earlier this year, AMP's group executive advice and banking, Rob Caprioli, praised his contribution to the business.

"His achievements are extensive, in particular his work to increase adviser professionalism, our ongoing focus on providing high quality service to our customers and the development of AMP's financial planning model," Caprioli said.

Helmich will be joined by TAL executive, Marcus O'Sullivan, who has been appointed as head of Affinia, replacing Craig Parker in the role.
