Pampered pets can now be included in the family’s health insurance policies offered by Manchester Unity.

There will be different levels of health care for per cover, with the friendly society paying up to 80 per cent of veterinary bills.

Premiums start from $3 a week for cats and dogs and the cover will include accidental injuries, after-hours emergency care, hospitalisation and surgery up to $8,000 a year.

The potential market for pet health insurance seems to be immense, according to Manchester Unity, with almost two-thirds of Australian households having at least one pet.

Their owners spend a staggering $4.6 billion on looking after pets, making it one of the biggest industries in the country.

For the really pampered pet there is comprehensive cover at $4 a week, which will cover all treatment from an upset tummy to serious cancer treatment, skin conditions and infectious diseases up to $10,000 a year.

Extras on the policy include annual vaccinations, health checks and teeth cleaning.

Manchester Unity marketing executive Samantha Owen said once the pet is insured with the society it has cover for life, regardless of their claims history or age. “We also provide cover for hereditary conditions that may arise,” she said.

The market potential for the product can be gauged by the fact that there are about 2.4 million cats in Australia and 3.7 million dogs.
