The Financial Planning Association (FPA) has opened its inaugural ‘Life Risk Specialist’ education program for registrations from member advisers, following completion of its pilot program.

Registrations for the 12-month course, which will see successful advisers awarded the FPA’s trademark LRS specialist designation, will close on August 7, and the course will begin a week later.

The FPA launched the program in June last year to “fill an enormous hole” that was left when the Life Underwriters program ended in 1995.

The corporate education arm of Deakin University, DeakinPrime, is providing the seven education modules for the three-trimester program.

Deputy chief executive and head of professionalism Deen Sanders said the FPA was expecting strong member registrations for the course, based on the success of the pilot program.

Sanders said “a number” of member advisers, including certified financial planners (CFPs), had graduated from the pilot program, which began in July last year.

“The enthusiasm from our pilot program graduates has been such that we’re confident the designation will become industry’s pre-eminent life risk qualification,” he said.
