ASIC chairman’s vague claim to fame

What do ‘Hot for the Teacher’, ‘Tobacco Road’ and ‘She’s My Machine’ have in common with the new chairman of the Australian Securities and Investments Commission, James Shipton?

Well, apparently, they are all related to US rocker, David Lee Roth of Van Halen fame.

How does Outsider know this? Because it represented the priority question asked by Tasmanian Greens Senator, Peter Whish-Wilson when Shipton made his maiden appearance before the Joint Parliamentary Committee on Corporations and Financial Services.

The Parliamentary Committee exchange went something like this:

Mr Whish-Wilson: Welcome, Mr Shipton. Your answer to my first question to you is going to have quite a big bearing on your credibility, certainly in my eyes. Is it true that you are related to David Lee Roth?

Mr Shipton: How much time have we got, Senator? Is there such a thing as a ‘godbrother’? My late-father knew the Roths and became an official godfather to David. That is the connection. I unfortunately have never met David, nor, unlike my father, attended, believe it or not, Van Halen concerts—but maybe that is something that I will be able to progress.

Not your usual parliamentary committee interrogation, but certainly more entertaining than those involving Shipton’s predecessor.
