ANZ Wealth’s Karyn Hilton was awarded the Female BDM of the Year award at the 2016 Women in Financial Services awards, Jassmyn Goh writes.
The ability to don a financial planning hat as well as a business development manager (BDM) hat at the same time has pushed ANZ Wealth senior risk BDM, Karyn Hilton, to rise above her peers.
Hilton attributed winning Money Management and Super Review’s Female BDM of the Year award to understanding the many layers within the corporate world thanks to previously running her own financial planning business before changing her career path.
While advisers often told her to take off her BDM hat or have both BDM and adviser hats on, Hilton said there was always a way to find a happy medium if advisers were trying to step outside the rules of her business.
“I get to impart all my skills on to all my advisers. I get down to a micro level and I have a look at the whole practice and each individual person because my belief is that an adviser should just advise,” Hilton said.
“As a BDM I need to help them build their business and by doing that I need to analyse what everybody in that business does, how they do it, and get them to look outside the boxes so that I can make improvements and the adviser can focus on advising.”
The judges said Hilton was an excellent candidate for the award with very strong referees.
Finalist, Tracey Moore of BT Financial Group, was praised for helping provide her advisers alternative solutions for the numerous legislative changes.
MetLife head of steadfast partnership distribution, Karen Purcell, was nominated for helping increase life insurance cover to small-to-medium enterprises to help Australian businesses protect, retain, and attract staff.
Fitzpatricks Private Wealth adviser business partner, Terese Stead, was lauded for her genuine view of ensuring that the practices she worked with achieved unrivalled client advocacy results.
