The outlook for the global listed-infrastructure sector as an asset class appears to be promising, “despite (and perhaps benefiting from)” the recent equity-market turmoil, according to Standard&Poor’s.
In its first-ever peer review and sector report, the researcher found that the listed asset class provides an opportunity for individual investors to gain exposure.
“It is however early days for listed-infrastructure products, and there is plenty of potential for change,” cautioned S&P fund analyst Simone Arblaster.
S&P also expects “more managers will enter into the sector, and that some may leave or materially change their profiles”, he said.
“It remains to be seen whether the sector becomes increasingly volatile and more like mainstream equities, or whether it maintains its low volatility, low correlation characteristics, which are currently attracting investors.”
