The Federal Opposition has called on the Government to return to a bipartisan approach to defining the purpose of superannuation.
The shadow Treasurer, Chris Bowen, has used his address to the Financial Services Council (FSC) Leader’s Summit in Melbourne to call for not only a return to bipartisanship with respect to the purpose of superannuation but also with respect to findings of the Financial System Inquiry.
He said the Opposition had been working with the Government on a bipartisan approach to defining the purpose of superannuation but this had lapsed when the Government had decided to define a purpose in the May Budget.
“Prior to the caretaker period, we had started good faith discussions with the Government. The calling of the election precluded those discussions being finalised. I note the Government put its own superannuation objective on Budget night. This does not reflect an agreed bipartisan objective,” Bowen said.
“It would be good to have this matter dealt with and to have an agreed, bipartisan legislated objective for superannuation this calendar year. We will be happy to resume these discussions with the Government and reach an agreement on this as soon as possible.”
