ANZ this week looked internally to replace its Australian Chief executive, Philip Chronican, announcing that it would be promoting its Global Commercial Banking managing director, Mark Whelan to the role.
The big banking group said Whelan, who has been a member of the ANZ Management Board since October, last year would be reporting to ANZ chief executive, Mike Smith.
Chronican, who has had a 32 year career in banking, is leaving his role to pursue a non-executive career.
Commenting on the change, Smith said Australia was ANZ's home market and Whelan's appointment reflected the bank's focus on developing internal talent.
