A rundown of the latest issues and legislative changes impacting self-managed superannuation funds (SMSF) advice in 2012 will lead off presentations at the inaugural Money Management Masterclass education workshop next month in Sydney.?

The one-day workshop, to be held in Sydney on Tuesday 27 March, will feature an impressive line-up of quality speakers, specialising in the SMSF sector.

The SMSF Essentials 2012 Masterclass boasts a polished group of SMSF professionals, including:

  • Peter Hogan (MLC Technical)
  • Aaron Dunn (The SMSF Academy)
  • David Barrett (Macquarie Adviser Services)
  • Ian Glenister (Glenister & Co), Chris Hill (Hill Advisers)
  • Philip La Greca (Multiport)
  • Jo Heighway (Engage Super Audits), and
  • Claire Mackay (Quantum Wealth Advisors).

MLC senior technical manager Peter Hogan will present a session on the leading SMSF strategies. He will case-study these strategies, as well as some of the more unusual ones that planners may be unaware of.

Aaron Dunn from The SMSF Academy will also be teaming up with Hogan to discuss the big issues impacting SMSF advice this year, while Multiport’s technical services director Philip La Greca will deliver an informative session on preparing an SMSF investment strategy.

La Greca will examine asset classes, asset allocation, portfolio blending, and risk versus return.

The head of Macquarie Adviser Services technical, David Barrett, will discuss strategic modelling.

This session will apply actuarial modelling skills to some common and emerging strategies and provide planners with some useful and practical insights.

The SMSF workshop also includes two interactive panel sessions, including one that will explore the ever-topical issue of what happens when it all goes wrong.

The panellists – comprising of an auditor, planner, accountant and lawyer – will discuss some common misnomers when dealing with the regulator and the Australian Taxation Office concerning issues such as audits, investment strategies, title to assets and updating trust deeds.

The SMSF education workshop will be held in Sydney on Tuesday 27 March 2012. The workshop will be CPD accredited with 9-10 points expected.
