Former High Court judge Sir Anthony Mason has criticised the Government for undermining confidence in superannuation.
Addressing the gala dinner of the SMSF Professionals Association (SPAA), Mason suggested that superannuation should be treated as having equal standing with the family home.
"Reform and proposals for reform sometimes floated can undermine confidence in the future of superannuation," he said.
Mason warned that the creation of such doubt in the future of super could ultimately result in greater pressure on the age pension.
He said it was a fact of life that the considerable levels of funds under management in superannuation represented a temptation.
"And Governments have a poor record with respect to resisting temptation," Mason said.
