The Australian hedge fund industry is currently worth around $208 billion, trumping the absolute return hedge fund markets of Singapore and Hong Kong, according BasisPoint Consulting managing director David Chin.
The recently launched 'Australian Hedge and Boutique Fund Directory' by Tripe A Partners and BasisPoint indentified 102 boutique fund managers (long-only, benchmark-unaware) with $165 billion funds under management, and 63 hedge fund firms with $43 billion.
The report found that Australian managers have invested more than $60 billion into global markets.
Chin said it was the first time the industry had been documented in terms of a comprehensive list of boutiques.
"Australian superannuation fund investors will benefit by knowing the full set of available fund managers in the Australian market," he said.
"I think it's more important for international investors to know that the industry is much larger than they might have expected, especially when compared to the Hong Kong and Singapore markets which do receive a lot more attention relative to Australia."
