The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has begun mass mail-outs inviting people to attend free seminars on running self-managed superannuation funds (SMSFs).
The letters remind recipients that the law imposes strict obligations on the trustees of SMSFs and says the seminars will “provide an in-depth look at the rules and regulations that govern super with respect to SMSFs, and it will help you understand what you need to do to meet those obligations as a trustee”.
The letter makes clear that the seminars are intended for trustees who have been running their own funds for more than 18 months or who have outsourced a considerable amount of the management of the fund.
It quite specifically states that the seminar is “not intended for new trustees, or those individuals thinking of starting an SMSF”.
