The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has launched a new campaign to remind small businesses to pay their taxes, noting the vast majority continue to play by the rules.
In the lead-up to Australia Day, the campaign asks small businesses to think about the 'fair go' foundations of the tax system and how evasion can affect both the community and the economy.
The ATO said most small businesses agree tax compliance is reasonable, with its most recent survey showing 95 per cent of respondents thought paying collected GST to the ATO was fair and just 7 per cent believed BAS tweaking could help a business financially.
"The Australian concept of a fair go for all importantly applies to our tax system as well. That's why we support businesses trying to do the right thing," ATO Deputy Commissioner Steve Vesperman said.
Businesses that need extra assistance can turn to the ATO website's Small Business Assist application or the ATO mobile app, Vesperman added.
"The key to staying on track is to be as up-to-date with your obligations as possible. So even if you can't pay by the due date, make sure you lodge your BAS and we will take it from there," he said.
