Zurich Financial Services’ retail team has been given a boost with seven appointments in recent months.

Zurich group general manager Barry Stephen says the appointments come as the group embarks upon 18 months of rapid growth of its retail services.

Trevor Susman has been appointed state manager of Zurich’s retail in-vestment business in Queensland. Susman replaces Rod Hudson, who has been promoted to the position of national alliance manager, based in Melbourne.

Susman joins Zurich from Suncorp Metway, where he was manager of sales.

Also in Queensland, Tony Stephens joins Zurich as national coaching manager, with Michael Oliver joining the company as a business man-ager.

Stephens previously worked for Zurich in business development, while Oliver joined from Connelly Temple where he was Brisbane marketing manager.

Also joining Zurich is Alison Flynn as NSW/ACT business manager. Flynn previously worked with Citicorp Life, where she held many busi-ness development roles.

Other newly appointed business managers include Sam Sorace in Victo-ria and Tim Flavell in Western Australia. Prior to joining Zurich, Sorace was a business development manager with National Financial Management, while Tim spent more than eight years with BT Funds Man-agement in both Perth and Melbourne.

Melanie Campbell also joins as marketing support manager for its Vic-torian operations. Prior to joining Zurich, Campbell was part of the business solutions and facilities management company ABS.

The IFSA board has appointed David Mico as senior policy manager in charge of policy development in life insurance.

Mico has been in the life insurance industry for more than 20 years, the last 13 of which has been with Tyndall.

Prior to joining IFSA, he was chief manager of operations at Tyndall.

Alan Preston has been named as one of three second commissioners of taxation.

Preston is currently secretary to the Review of Business Taxation and has spent eight years as a deputy secretary of the Treasury.

Preston joins Treasury following the retirement of Peter Simpson. Simpson’s public service career spanned more than 40 years, primarily in the Australian Taxation Office.

Software developer Lumley Technology has promoted Glen Ashelford to the newly created position of marketing manager, life insurance.

Ashelford has been with Lumley Technology for about six years. Prior to joining Lumley, he worked with National Mutual and Westpac.

Former Perpetual Fund Services state manager Philip Anthon has joined Suncorp-Metway as manager of its compliance and trusts operations.

Anthon will be responsible for the legal and statutory compliance of trusts. At Perpetual he was responsible for compliance and risk re-view.

Andrew Findlay has joined Deutsche Bank as its new communications manager for financial planning, private client stockbroking and pri-vate banking.

Findlay will be responsible for brand development and information management for these departments, with a particular emphasis on building Deutsche Bank’s profile among high-net worth individuals.

Prior to joining Deutsche Bank, Findlay worked for Union Bank of Switzerland in Zurich and London.

David Felman will succeed Katherine Collins as manager of three mu-tual funds at Fidelity Investments in the US, including the $1.7 bil-lion Mid-Cap Stock Fund.

Collins, 30, is stepping down as manager on August 2 after more than two years running the fund to take a job at Fidelity Foundation, which represents Fidelity’s philanthropic interests.

Felman, 33, currently manages the $1.04 billion Fidelity Convertible Securities Fund. Felman, who joined Fidelity in 1993, will manage Fidelity Mid-Cap Stock, Fidelity Adviser Mid Cap and a variable annuity fund.
