Apostle Funds Management has announced a partnership with a US-based investment manager as well as appointed Adam Camillo as its new chief operating officer.

The firm has partnered with US investment manager CastleKnight Management to provide Australian wholesale and institutional investors access to its opportunistic strategy across the capital structure.

This is the first time CastleKnight is delivering its strategy to Australian investors, according to Apostle.

With assets under management of US$2.2 billion ($3.4 billion) and founded in 2020, CastleKnight is focused on mispriced securities and asymmetric risk-return opportunities. It applies a macro lens and rigorous bottom-up research process to identify investments driven by catalysts including M&A, restructurings, and regulatory shifts.

Managing director Mitchell Gunman said the partnership will enable its wholesale and institutional clients to access a strategy that is often difficult to find outside of major US allocators.

“Our role is to connect Australian investors with high-quality, institutional-grade managers. CastleKnight has a strong track record in navigating complex capital structures and excels in volatile market conditions – capabilities that are increasingly critical in today’s investment landscape,” Gunman explained.

“The firm’s dynamic, agile approach positions them to pursue outsized returns, making this strategy a compelling addition to client portfolios.”

Aaron Weitman, CastleKnight managing partner and CIO, also commented: “We believe this is one of the most attractive environments we’ve seen in over a decade. Our approach attempts to capture dislocations and capitalise on volatility whether in equity or credit.”

Meanwhile, the fund manager has appointed Camillo as its new COO, having joined the firm in April from Associate Global Partners, an ASX-listed boutique asset manager based in Sydney, where he held the same role.

Previously he worked at Perpetual as its head of corporate marketing and brand, and spent almost seven years at AMP Capital in a variety of marketing roles.

This appointment follows the firm’s recent leadership transition which saw Karyn West step back from her managing director role, having founded the company in 2008. She has now taken an executive chair position, and the MD position is now held by Gunman.

He said: “We are pleased to welcome Adam to Apostle as we continue to advance our growth strategy and deepen our client offering. Complementing our institutional background and enhancing our ability to deliver high-performing alternative solutions and curated global strategies, his appointment marks another important step in the evolution of our business.”

The firm has also hired Harrison Lane as an investments director, who joins from a role as vice president for multi-asset strategies and solutions at BlackRock. He relocated to Sydney from London last year after a period working for BlackRock and Willis Towers Watson in the UK.

In the role at Apostle, he will serve as an investment specialist as well as a member of its direct investment team and manager selection program.
