Politicians warned on super tinkering

The major political parties have been warned that unnecessarily tinkering with superannuation policy will carry with it significant risk of a negative reaction from those aged over 50.

National Seniors Australia chief executive Michael O'Neill told the Conference of Major Super Funds in Brisbane that over 50s represented around 44 per cent of the electorate and were therefore not to be trifled with.

He said over 50s were critically engaged with their superannuation and the impact of Government policy, "so our message is don't unnecessarily fiddle too much".

O'Neill said the attitudes of over 50s needed to be measured against research which revealed increasing deterioration in people's expectations with respect to dealing with cost of living pressures.

O'Neill also counseled advisers that they needed to establish an appropriate rapport with over 50s including showing them appropriate respect.
