The first phase of the 2017 Money Management Rate the Raters survey saw Lonsec regaining its top spot after being unseated by its rival Zenith, last year.

In the eyes of fund managers, Lonsec outperformed its peers in three out of six categories, earning the highest ratings in research methodology, transparency of its research process, and the quality and experience of its staff.

SQM Research, which is a relatively new entry in Money Management’s survey and much smaller than its well-established competitors, managed to win in two categories with clients appreciating both the rating process and feedback provided by the company.

All in all, the survey showed the overall marketplace had not changed drastically since last year, with Lonsec and Zenith still the most popular research houses among the fund managers looking to rate their products.

Also, the survey found that fund managers remained split on the role research houses currently played, with 53 per cent of them saying there was an overreliance on rating agencies.

Full results of the survey will be published in the 6 July issue of Money Management.
