Former TAL Life and AXA employee, Michael Downey, has been appointed as the head of practice development at MLC, in a step across from his current role as head of sales.

Downey, who has been with MLC for 10 years, brings more than 30 years of industry experience to the position, which has seen him lead multiple teams, most recently the strategic accounts team.

MLC general manager of advice, Ross Barnwell, said the insurance giant is confident that the new appointment for Downey will continue the organisation on its mission to drive a customer-focused business.

"Mike's experience will be key in helping us deliver to our purpose of enabling advice businesses to deliver a valued and enduring client experience," Barnwell said.

"He will bring a wealth of experience from previous leadership roles. "

Downey said that he is looking forward to the new position, which will see him developing and leading business strategy for the practice development team and working to grow business and implement best practice business strategies in his work with licensee advisers.

"Leadership and executing strategies are a passion of mine; therefore the fit seemed natural in stepping into a position which is focused on using these skills," he said.

"It's a great opportunity to work closely with MLC's advice businesses... and to have been given the opportunity to lead the practice development team."
