"At the end of the day, clients don't care about how much you know until they know how much you care."

That is the motto of this year's Financial Planner of the Year award winner at the Money Management/Lonsec 2016 Fund Manager of the Year Awards, Joseph Hoe, who has always relied on referrals from existing clients, which is testament to his professionalism and his strong belief in always working in the client's best interests.

Hoe started his career as an accountant in 1999, but soon realised that financial planning was his true calling. After working in various firms, including HSBC, he joined Financial Wisdom authorised representative, Wealthwise, in 2012 and works as a senior financial adviser.

"I personally am a big supporter of being proactive. Whenever there are changes in my client's circumstances, whether it is a new home or a new child, I will always know about it and I will send an e-mail or give them a call to congratulate them, and also to visit them," Hoe said.

Hoe believes in providing strategic, holistic, objective-based advice and collaborating with clients extensively to learn about their financial goals in three, five, or 10 years.

An advocate of ongoing education, Hoe's educational qualifications include a Bachelor of Commerce, a Certified Practising Accountants' certification, Certified Financial Planner, Master of Tax (with distinction), and a Diploma of Financial Services.

He volunteers his time as an assessor of the CFP Professional Education Program, and supports junior planners as part of his firm's mentoring program to hone their technical and interposal skills.

He was a recipient of the Association of Financial Advisers' Excellence in Education Award, Western Australia in 2015.

Judges were also highly impressed with Hoe's record of giving back to the industry. He won the Financial Planning Association's Future2 Community Service Award for Western Australia and is now a judge for these awards.

The judges were also impressed with Crosby Dalwood managing director, Helga Baxter, Tax Ethical principal, Stuart Berry, and Epona Financial Guidance director and financial planner, Lisa Duggan.

Duggan won the Financial Planner of the Year title at Money Management's Women in Financial Services Awards in 2015.
